Even after a year full of lockdowns, immunity programs, and vaccination drives, it seems that COVID-19 isn’t going any time soon.
After a disastrous second wave, the scenario in India is definitely improving with the decrease in the number of cases day by day.
However, health experts still believe that there is a huge chance of the third wave of COVID-19 in India now that the number of cases is increasing in other countries.
Dr. Yudhyavir Singh, the Manager of the Covid-19 ICU in AIIMS Delhi, said that it’s necessary to lift few restrictions considering the economy but should be done within the bounds of COVID-19 appropriate behavior. (Wearing masks, using sanitizers, weekend lockdowns, etc.)
Many doctors believed that Delhi has already achieved herd immunity owing to the whopping number of cases in the second wave.
But there is still a chance of an exponential increase in cases. The Head of Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases of the Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr. Samiran Panda said that there is a possibility that 3rd wave of COVID 19 can hit India by August end.
Another set of health experts hypothesize that a majority of the third wave would be constituted by breakthrough infections due to vaccination.
These infections would be much less severe than those during the second wave. Dr. Chandrakant Lahiri, Physician and Epidemiologist (Public Policy and Health System Specialist) conjectures that if one continues to use masks and sanitizers, the third wave might be avoided. Dr. Jugal Kishore, head of the Community Medicine department,
Safdarjung Hospital said that even if a third wave arrives, it won’t spike as high as the second wave and won’t be as fatal.
Nonetheless, whatever the third wave is like, only time will tell us. Till then, wear your masks, sanitize your hands, and get vaccinated!
