The Little-known Wealthiest Person in History! Mansa Musa & 15 Extravagant Facts

The richest person in the world currently is, Bernard Arnault, Chairman of Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), with a net worth of $198.9 billion.

But you’d be shocked to know that this is nowhere near Mansa Musa, the wealthiest man of all time who was a West African ruler in the 14th century.

He was so rich that his generosity wrecked an entire country’s economy. It has been reported by Rudolph Butch Ware, Associate professor of history at the University of California that Mansa Musa had lots of money, so much that it’s almost impossible to get a sense of just how wealthy and powerful he truly was. The wealth of Mansa Musa is believed to have been greater than that of all modern billionaires combined.

His entourage consisted of around 60,000 people and a huge amount of gold cycled back and forth through the entire Mediterranean world. He showered the cities he visited with gold, giving it away to the poor, and built a new mosque every Friday. His excessive generosity resulted in hyperinflation that plagued the entire region from Cairo to Medina.

Dying in 1337, Musa left his wealth to his heirs, who not only squandered the best part but also failed to protect the empire when it was overturned in the civil war and conquered by invading foreign nations.

Nonetheless, while the legendary ruler may not be remembered by today’s generation, time remembers him through the many monuments and mosques he has built.

The most notable one is the Sankoré University, which is now an academic ground for over 25,000 students and has one of the largest libraries in the world.
